Wanting to be wanted

Is it a bad thing to want to be needed? I don't think so. If my abilities are not wanted or noticed, then why not go somewhere where they would be?

Umm... So many facets to your questions.

Is this not what everybody wants? Forget about the the cliche, "I just want to be happy." That's B as in B, S as in S. There is just more to it than that.

The answer to you first question is definately NO. Everybody should want to be needed. In terms of work, of course we are needed... it's a matter of whether or not the individual (or corporation) that needs us, appreciates us.

I like to think I am a hard worker and a damn crazy loyal worker; sometimes probably too loyal (it's one of my flaws -- maybe). I've worked a few places where my boss tried to put on a show and make it seem as though you are needed. You can usually see right through that.

I am currently writing for the school newspaper (University of South Dakota -- The Volante). I have two editors who are very smart and good at what they do as editors, but a part of me wonders... "What real world work experience do they have?" I ask this because they sincerely compliment the reporters and constantly motivate the staff. This is just not done in the real world, is it?

Obviously their need for us is magnatized because how are they going to find someone to replace us if we go? They won't, at least not very easily. So they will be stuck with searching for news and writing the stories themselves... not very fun.

I would hope that these ladies (my editors) are simply natural leaders. Natural leaders would want to let their staff know that their abilities are noticed and their hard work is appreciated. This is management 101, right?

Should you go somewhere else if you are not appreciated? Yes. If you like what you do as a profession and you are good at what you do, there should be no problem to pick up and move on. The problem there with most people is that they are just not willing to make such a drastic change in their life. Too many people seem very willing to endure a crappy work environment just so they don't have to move or have to deal with change. In my book -- that is pure bunk!

I liken this to a woman who refuses to leave an abusive boyfriend/husband because the change would be too drastic and the abuse is "not that bad." Again, B as in B...

Life is supposed to be fun. Work is also supposed to be fun -- *GASP*. Seriously, if you aren't enjoying your work then why are you working there or in that profession? Find what you love to do and find a good place to do it. If it means change, serious change, so be it. Life's an adventure, or at least it should be.

(Okay, Tony Robbins can leave my body now)

Yeah, I'm a total fan boy! :)

Seriously, I stumbled along the blog and it's different than all the other politcal crap I read all the time. Your blog is part of a diversity project I have initiated upon myself.... or something.
